Iron Man Suit Created by Indian Engineering Students

The real Iron Man is an engineering student in India.

This is what we get when someone gets an obsession with the Hollywood action movies: a replica of the Iron Man suit that is fully functioning, but doesn’t work exactly like that of Tony Stark.

A mechanical engineering student in his final year at Calicut University, Vimal Govind Manikandan, together with his team, developed an exoskeleton that can lift up to 330 pounds. But no, it doesn’t fly or shoot energy beams. Weighing 200 pounds, it has the exact Iron Man color scheme; but its maker said that the biggest influence was the film Avatar, and the huge AMP suits depicted in James Cameron’s science fiction blockbuster.

This isn’t the first time that the team has showed their robotic project. In 2015, they unveiled the first version called Generation One, which is a larger, mechanically-powered first generation model. Their new $750 model still has problems with the walking abilities and they look forward in refining that aspect.

Regardless, the engineering student is now a campus superstar – walking around in the exosuit complete with shades – and has exhibited his team’s creation at the American Society of Research’s recent conference on Mechanics and Manufacturing. More importantly, the makers plan to use their exosuit in defense, industrial weight lifting, and material handling.
